Kensington families receive title deeds from Mayor Hill-Lewis

19 June 2025

Residents of the Kensington area were excited to receive title deeds which confirmed their home ownership status yesterday, 18 June 2025. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Councillor Carl Pophaim, Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, hosted a special breakfast to hand over the deeds to beneficiary families as part of the City’s ‘No Cost Transfer’ initiative to enable cost-free home ownership for qualifying tenants of City affordable rental apartments.

‘It is meaningful to join our Kensington residents at this special occasion to transfer title deeds to these families who are tenants of City rental units, allowing them to officially become homeowners. Thousands of beneficiaries will receive their title deeds over the next few months. For these families and future generations this document is so much more than a piece of paper, it is a life-changing document which acts as both a home and a financial asset,’ said Mayor Hill-Lewis.

‘We are on a mission to create homeowners. We have set the target of 11 000 and we are currently more than halfway with our renewed title deed programme. We have already tracked down 6 000 beneficiaries through our title deed programme and we have 5 000 to go – and these are typically the difficult cases, where we do not have updated details for the beneficiary or they are in another province.

‘If you are a beneficiary in an older City or government housing development, and do not have your title deed, you are encouraged to contact the City. The deed not only makes it possible to carry out banking transactions, create a will and testament but also enables property sales and other empowering benefits. Over the next few months, you will also see our new and improved Human Settlements bus going into communities, not only to bring services closer to communities, but also to take our Title-Deed-to-Door programme to our residents again,’ said Councillor Pophaim.
